Today is the Day to Remember our Veterans…

…when we as a country formally honor the service and sacrifice of our former and current U.S. military members as well as their families – whose unique support is sacrificial and inspiring. I also want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank our B&B guests who currently serve or have previously served. We are proud to now serve you and honored to have you as part of our Ellwanger B&B family on this day and everyday. Here are some near and dear family members.

“Granola Factory” is my go to granola!

“Granola Factory” is my go to granola at the Ellwanger Estate B&B-as of last weekend. And what a difference a weekend makes. That’s food for thought, as I hosted a B&B stay for Calvin and Lisa Virgilio, Chief Baking Officers at the “Granola Factory”. But it didn’t take much thinking, as it was love at the first bit!  And it’s a Wegmans.

Elope in the Vintage Surroundings of the Ellwanger Estate

This is the time of year when the seasons change from the first green suggestions of spring to the warmer weather and blooming gardens of summer. But here, at the Ellwanger, it is Elopement Season, with brides in delicate white lace gliding down the carved oak staircase, to meet their cherished partners in front of gathered friends and family and promise their undying love for each other.

Sometimes the vows are exchanged in front of the period fireplace of the Great Room; sometimes the couple decides to take their ceremony to the fresh air and garden scents of the generous porch, overlooking the beautiful Ellwanger Garden.

Not all the brides are young, not all the gowns are formal, but all the couples have something in common: a love of romance, an appreciation of vintage surroundings and a deep faith and hope in the future together.

Along with all the other amenities that the Ellwanger Estate B&B offers, you can also awaken your inner artist. One of our frequent return guests, Anya Orzechowska, usually manages to depict a local scene or a figure in a painting during her stays.

Recently Anya has been focusing on portraits of pets and says that it is inspiring to capture the love of people she has met for the pet that shares their home. This last weekend, she finished a portrait of Piggy, a Boston terrier with an attitude and Fox, a gentle pit bull.

Although she often works from photographs, Anya says the only problem with painting these tail-wagging pets is that she always wants to take them home with her afterwards!

Nominee for The Best Valentine Getaway, ROCS WHEC (Channel 10).

And to whom do I owe my debit of gratitude for nominating the Ellwanger Estate B&B as the Best Valentine Getaway?  So you can imagine my surprise when Channel 10 called to report that the Ellwanger Estate had been nominated and was now in the top five! That was a shot in the arm. The competition was stiff and my hat goes off to the winner: Woodcliff Hotel.

So what would I change for the 2017 competition ? Not a thing other than category.

I love the intimacy  of a FOUR room Bed and Breakfast, vs a 236 room hotel, with a golf course, spa, restaurant, fitness center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools.  Oops, I’m forgetting who I am promoting! However we are two different entities. If you are looking for peace, quiet, serenity, romance, charm, in a Downton Abby way with lush gardens, wildlife, and all walking distance to the U or R, College Town, Highland Park and downtown, then I’m your retreat.
