Hospitality Intern never tires of Ellwanger Elopements and Rochester seed swap

As Kojo prepares to graduate from Monroe Community College hospitality program, he applauded the Rochester seeds swap and the personalized Ellwanger elopements. During his short time at the Ellwanger Estate Bed and Breakfast, he has learned everything from culinary skills, preparation, serving, bed making 101, silver polishing, planting a garden, button sewing, furniture restoration, and attending Visit Rochester meetings. His highlight was meeting Mayor Evans. And what a highlight indeed-as he praised Kojo’s perseverance, quoting, “ now you can take over” the running of the bed and breakfast. While the internship is geared towards preparing interns for hospitality management, the true test is in finding a balance and excelling in customer service. So what 17 hours of the day would you like to work? He is sure up for the task!

Enchanted April, infused with Jazz

With the enchantment of April, my thoughts turn towards JAZZ.  It all started over a decade ago with our pop up Jazz music salons. It was Jack Presberg and jazz jammers that found me. It was love at first sight, and we all became one big family~ on the first Saturday of each month, starting in April. While the Ellwanger Estate B&B knows how to jazz things up a bit, we also have a little help from our friends.  So it starts once again, and our B&B guests are in for a treat this Saturday, April 2nd, from 2-4 PM as we usher in the Spring with JAZZ!

Ellwanger Estate Bed & Breakfast, 10th year in the making: It is the Rochester Experience

The Ellwanger Estate Bed & Breakfast is celebrating it’s 10th year in the making. More than a bed, more than a breakfast, it is the Rochester Experience. We officially open in April 2009, after three years of extensive renovations. It was pretty much abandoned and decrepit and in pretty bad shape. This historical Bed & Breakfast was originally the grandest of places called the Rose Mansion and Gardens: the spot to have elegant weddings, receptions, and overnight stays. In fact John F Kennedy Jr. has walked through these doors. The Rose Mansion and Gardens closed in the late 1980s.

The scope of the renovations was to restore the original mansion with all the latest technology. The public spaces have a museum quality with hand painted murals, chandeliers, exquisite antique furniture, and artwork, with  21st-century amenities. It’s an iconic bed-and-breakfast; you don’t see anything like this in many places. The Ellwanger Estate Bed & Breakfast was the home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Designer Show House in 2008. The mansion and all four guest rooms are a work of art.  This is a Rochester experience not to be missed. And you especially do not want to miss the lavish farm to table gourmet breakfast. That is a celebration in and of itself!

University of Rochester, Rochester NY – Ellwanger Estate

The handsome Ellwanger Estate, former home of Rochester socialite Helen Ellwanger, wife of horticulturist George Ellwanger, sits in an historic and wealthy section of Rochester. First built as a farmhouse in 1817, and then purchased and enlarged by Ellwanger (co owner of Ellwanger and Barry Nurseries) in 1867 and 1910, staying here is an immersion into the wealthy lifestyle of the Victorian Age. The gardens, as one would imagine, are beautiful. Owner, Rosemary Janofsky, purchased the estate in 2006 (it was previously operating as an inn), and has lovingly preserved it. In 2008, as a “Designer ShowHouse” fundraiser for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, guest rooms were used as fresh canvasses for interior designers, so each offers a unique and posh experience. Who stays here? Business travelers, honeymooners, romantic couples, parents visiting U of Rochester students, and anyone who favors sleeping on firm organic mattresses. And, if a television film crew is in town, chances are they choose to stay here.

The Landmark Society of Western New York’s bulletin announced:  “The 2017 Statewide Preservation Conference returns to the city of Rochester, April 6-8th. Downtown Rochester is undergoing a profound transformation, fueled in large part by historic preservation. “In short, preservation will surround us at every turn”.

And now the rest of the story…

On a balmy September evening in 1937, Helen C. Ellwanger gathered her nearest and dearest friends and colleagues into the Ellwanger Estate carriage house and proceeded to form the Landmark Society of Western New York.  This was part of an effort to save the deteriorated Greek Revival Campbell Whittlesey House on South Fitzhugh Street in the city. The Society went on to become an advocate for saving and restoring our area’s historic buildings. That was 80 years ago.

Her legacy continues here and now at her home: the Ellwanger Estate, which received the Landmark’s Historic Home Award in 2014. This award is given to owners of private residences for their continued care of and commitment to the preservation of an architecturally significant house over a minimum of seven years.  So, In short, preservation does surround us at every turn.  Perhaps you would like to take a turn, as a guest at the Ellwanger Estate B&B.
